Traumatic life experiences can have a lasting effect on our ability to live a fulfilling life, as can grief and loss.
Adverse childhood experiences, such as emotional abuse, neglect or sexual abuse, or a traumatic event or events, can leave a person feeling depressed, anxious, angry, suffering low self-esteem. A person that has experienced trauma may have difficulty with personal relationships and their work. Feelings of anger, guilt and shame are common, as is self-destructive behaviour and self-medication.

Loss is one of the most difficult experiences life deals us. The loss of a loved one or even a job or a pet can be traumatic. The subsequent grief we feel can be very hard to deal with and feel overwhelming.
